A number of people have written in with the news that Cryptonym has found an apparent backdoor for the NSA (called NSAKEY) in all current versions of Windows. However, you can open this backdoor yourself and install your own strong cryto module in place of the built-in one. (CNN) - Microsoft operating systems have a backdoor entrance for the National Security Agency, a cryptography expert said Friday, but the software giant denied the report and other experts differed on it.

The chief scientist at an Internet security company said Microsoft built in a "key" for the nation's most powerful intelligence agency to the cryptographic standard used in Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT4 and Windows2000.

To use cryptographic applications in Windows, users must load its cryptography architecture in a standard called CryptoAPI.

A year ago, researchers discovered there were two keys, or digital signatures, that allowed the loading of CryptoAPI -- Microsoft had one but the identity of the other keyholder was a mystery.

Andrew Fernandes of Ontario-based Cryptonym Corp. and his colleagues now say the NSA holds the second key because they found that a recent service pack for Windows NT failed to cloak the second key, revealing it as "_NSAKEY."

"In the data security profession, those three initials only mean one thing: National Security Agency," Fernandes said.

Microsoft denied that the key belongs to the NSA, saying instead that the "_NSAKEY" label simply means the cryptography architecture meets the NSA's standards for export.

"These reports are completely false," said Microsoft spokesman Dan Leach.

"The key does not allow any other party to start or stop cryptographic services on anyone's computers.

"So no, the government cannot spy on your computer using Microsoft software. We don't intentionally leave backdoors. Microsoft has consistently opposed key escrow because we feel it is no good for the consumer, for Microsoft and no good for the government."

Fernandes said the NSA key would allow the intelligence agency to load services on users' machines without their authorization, an option it more likely would use against a corporation than an individual.

Fernandes posted a "fix" to the key on his Web site Friday, along with a press release announcing his report on the second key. The NSA failed to return comment on the key.

The alleged NSA key came to light just days after Microsoft squelched a breach to its Web-based e-mail service, Hotmail.

Ok many smart asses say ''There is not a free lunch!!" You will pay sooner or later for your Linux. WTHF? You are just downloading ISO image from one of the thowsend mirrors and you put the CD or DVD in your PC - there you go! And the Linux distro - et last this what I am using - Suse will keep your Windows intact. You will have nice boot manager to start whatever you want. Not so with wondows but who cares. OK you have to learn some things and it will cost you time. When your time cost so much money better go play fucking golf and don't bother yourself with any computers.

Ok thare are crappy things with linux too. Furst of all you have to learn some things. But if you want only to type some documents, to check your e-mails and to browse the net you dont need to learn almost anything and you will have more robust system in any case. And not forget bunch of free programs. And your information is much safer.

here one linux user who knows a bit more but he dont understand what irony means. Indeed most of USB modems are not supported and you have to search them created by volunteers. The truth is that most of hardware producers do not support linux, they just don't care and this make some difficulties for the new users like me but every problem has a solution.

I wrote this bulshit just for fun and to see the peoples reaction. Actually I am using both Windows and Suse 10.1 and I do not understand why most of the visitors of the site believe that any of the articles on STR are serious. This is simply impossible. As you can see the autor is able to run very old version of red hat (I think this is very difficult for a newbie)and obviously he know a lot more about computers and networks and about linux. He use linux as a server and all time he writes absurds and actually he jockes with Microsoft and their policy and also with republicans and their belives.

This kind of irony can be seen on few sites where the autors are ateists and liberals and they ridicule tipical conservative people. Usually I have a lot of fun with this sites. Coments are also very funny.
The strange think is that only minority get the joke.

First of all I spend yesterday night installing this corel linux on one old PC. There was something about Debian inside. I think they use Debian kernel. However althougt I have been waithing with camera in my hands to make a photo of the jap maf yakudza they did not appear. May be this are special linux trick and the threat appear only ones and then you can not proove it any more because it disappeares from the cd.

Never heard about Corel Office suit. When it was better someone will use it but I dont know nobody using it! Why? Because probably it is a crap.

About modems. You think that I do not know how to configure my modem and you are maybe right but I know people who already are using linux for five years and they are forced to by second computer with Windows. Thanks God it is free and delivered with all new computers. Then they have internet and they are using their linux only in their local network but everybody knows that linux does not support modems but only LAN and only way to get internet via modem is WINDOWS!!! Or you have to find ISP who provide LAN cable to your home.

Second, corel linux is antique, and by all means, what you had there it was not corel linux, actually, it was not linux at all. Linux is very obsessive thing I got a lot of troubles with this mania and I still have problems. It seems that my problems will not be over soon. Here is how the story started.

Very first time I got linux it was from dealer on the street. First of oll this linux - it was Corel linux did not work on my computer. Thanks God. Unfortunately we have tested it on the computer of my friend. Of cource we did not know how dangerous thing it is. After starting instalation on the screen have appeared group of japanies mafia yakudza with guns pointed to us. Then linux have deleted all hard drive of my friend. We wrest the power cable from the wall but it was too late. All information was lost. His wife hava played on the game Sims months and she have had a lot of property money and children. Now everything was lost. This was the warning but I did not listen. Years later my problems become even worster. I have installed Suse on system and there was several wornings on the screen. I choose expert options because I am IT expert of cource and the result was that I could not start Windows anymore and I did not have internet. Simply Linux does not support my modem. Actually Linux does not support any modems and when you use Linux you have to work offline. Of cource I have installed windows again but during the process all my data was lost. I have asked where I can find drivers for Linux as they are not included in the DVD I have both. The answer was that if I want driver for my modem I have to write it myself?!

All this is serious. No shit.

Finally I found a place where the truth is said with no compromise. I live in Belgium, next to the Nederlands border and I can tell you that it is horrifying. All weekennd the gangs from France are traveling nearby our home to Nederland to buy drugs. Definately it is already time to change my old digicam Olympus 300z with something new. I was in plan to buy DSLR from the cheap ones and there was a choice between Nikon D50 and Canon EOS350. But guess what - after buying one of this DSLR's you will need also a flash. Looking arownd for flash - what a prices! circa EUR 200?! OK may be this is normal prioces for the paparazi who make their bucks with naked photos of selebrities but I am not ready to pay so much for this tings. It is just a hobby for me.

In the meantime fooling arownd in one of the corners of one shop I have seen the Fujifilm S5600 with 10X optical zoom and 5MP. When D50 has 6MP and 3X optical zoom with 55-180 linzes. And guess what - The fuji can be purchased on internet for approximately the price of one DSLR flash - 225 euros only for this beast. If you want D50 with flash and 10X zoom lens I can assure you it will cost you few pennies more. So desision was made and this is a right choise for me. Thanks GOD I make always right choices:)))

No? Than I will say it in brief because just now I dont have willingness to scan articles from magazines but I can say very sure. It is more than 10 manners to escape the prison. One of the tricks famous gangster did is to write a letter to The minister of internal affairs - in this case stupid french speaking goat and to complain that you have it very hot this summer because as you know Belgium is located in nord of Europe and normally airconditioners are not needed. So she permit short vacation to the crime boss and he disappeared. WTHF you expect?!

What for stupidity! Toshiba does not provide qwerty keyoards in Belgium. If you want just normal keyboard you have to pay extra 50 euros and to wait two months. What is this for service?! This really sucks. Because of that I will not buy new Toshiba laptop in Belgium. And I can asure you that Belgian keyboard is real DESASTER.

OK it is fairly sarcastic but there is some truth inside. If you want to work with Linux OS you have two choises. First is to buy books and to start to learn how it works. It is fery possible if you tink that you are smartass like me to lose all your data on your hard drive like I did several times. If you have some brains unlike me and you don't easy quit the game you will have wonderful OS much more powerful, steadily, trustful and safe than Windows. Other possibility is to pay a lot of bucks to someone who put his times in such studies and than you will have the same. If you pay once to guy like this you will not need to fight with problems with your computer probably several years adn just to do your work. Actually may be it is simply bad luck.

If you order via internet or just byu somewhere magazine with DVD included and you have common computer system then it is very possible that you can install Suse Linux without any problems. If you dont try to change settings suggested by Suse during instalation you will have your Windows untouched and you will see yourself with nice boot manager where you can choose which system you like to boot. Than you can start with Suse. Unlike other Linux distributions you can install programs easyly with program named Yast. It is even easyer than with Windows and you will have a bunch of free software - open office instead MS office, Gimp instead Photoshop. Ok it is not the same but I suppose you are not graphic designer. You will probably have all nessesary video players, music players and other towsends of free tools. You will ask yourself - how it comes? So much good and free software. This is because all linux systems have open source and every programmer can see the source himself and to use resources and libraries and such crap of the OS itself. As you know the source of Windows is fckn sicrat and that also meand that some mthfckrs can easily control your computer.

Ok with Windows it goes easily. You receive it included in the price of your new computer - What a crap! Then you have to buy antivirus and office pack and some other crap and then you will be happy user. All periferials will work with you and you will got a lot of add ons, troyqns and such crap so you have periodically to clean your computer from all worms and other shit who comes through your internet connection. Otherwise is easier and when we must be honest it is a lot of free software for windows too. So if you dont have time to loose and important tings on your PC stay with Windows and don't bother yourself with triffles.

It is wonder how there are so many ftp clients and a lot of them are Free to try; $36.95 to buy like Smart FTP. How smart it is I am not sure. Friend of my have it and it does not remember his password so he is forced to tipe his password again and again. By the way I am using FileZilla. settings -> control panel -> administrative tools -> local security policy -> local policies -> account policies -> password policy -> store password using reversible encryption…

I think that 99% of the computers still have this option disabled. So this passwords are not a secret to anyone able to run live Linux CD
